Genetically Modified Foods And Its Effects On Human Health

Chemicals should be kept in science labs instead of food that is produced for the general public. Genetically modified organisms are organisms that are genetically engineered with hazardous chemicals to fit the agenda of large corporations. Genetically modified foods are detrimental because of the negative health effects on humans, the malformation of animals, and the damage to the environment. The chemicals used to create genetically modified food have been linked with diseases such as cancer. Upon the consumption of a genetically engineered food, the chemicals within the food begins to immediately effect the body of the consumer. Emeritus Joe Cummins, a professor at the University of Western Ontario, stated that â€Å"there is evidence that [Bt] will impact directly on human health through damage to the ileum†¦can produce chronic illnesses such as fecal incontinence and/or flue-like upsets of the digestive system† (qtd. in Mather). Milk produced from a cow that has hig h levels of IGF-1, a hormone that stimulates cell growth due to the injection of rBST, has been linked with prostate cancer, breast cancer, and colon cancer (Mather). In fact, Dr. Samuel Epstein, a professor from the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois, has been raising awareness to the risk of cancer that comes with high levels of IGF-1 in milk.
